It can be. Alcohol withdrawal can cause seizures and delirium in dependent drinkers, and it is one of the few withdrawals that can be fatal. This is why detox should be medically supervised.
Usually one to two weeks for the acute phase, depending on how heavy and how long the drinking has been. The therapy phase that follows is longer and matters more for staying stopped.
Sometimes, where dependence is mild and home is stable. Established physical dependence usually needs supervised residential detox first, then outpatient therapy and follow-up.
It is treated as part of the condition, not a failure. The plan is reviewed, triggers reworked, and support increased rather than withdrawn. Relapse is common and it is not the end of treatment.
